We Don't Bake Muffins Book Club

Reading a book is just the beginning. Sharing the experience - that's the real rush!

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
Charles William Eliot

Women Talking

What a time. This book is light and funny and an all round feel good read. Or at least that’s what we thought we’d get from tonight’s host. But noooooo… this was not that. Women Talking by Miriam Toews is heavy to read, heavy to think about and just heavy.  None of us could say we liked the book – the subject matter, based on a real Mennonite community in Bolivia, is difficult. There’s no neat little bow at the end – no matter how much we wanted one.

Where the Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing

First book club of 2020! We were just getting the discussion going at 20:20 2020 …. ooooohhhh spooky. There was a consensus at tonight’s book club, mostly. Most of us thought that Where the Crawdads Sing is a wonderful read, full of characters we really liked – who live in a warm place! Yes that place is a marsh, and there’s no food, and Kya is really lonely and has to hide a lot – but still, it’s waaaaarrrrmmmm!! …

Everything I Never Told You

Everything I Never Told You

Pre-Christmas book club is always a special one – especially when our host is on the ball and we’re surrounded by twinkling lights and candle sticks, even if they do get the boot to make room for the food!

This month’s book, Everything I Never Told You, had some heavy duty themes…

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

There’s always something new to learn at book club. But tonight… wowsers!!! Did you know that Dannyville has a… wait for it….CEMETARY… with actual tenants?!! The questions is why, and who???? Perhaps it’s for the Costco crowd that don’t make it through the round-a-bout. Anywhoo, onto the book.

The Innocents

Good news and bad news for author Michael Crummey, author of this months read – The innocents. The good news is it’s been recently shortlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Gillar Prize. Yay you!  The bad news …

The Alice Network

Our after summer book club meeting always rocks! This one was no exception. Fun night! Everyone read the book and everyone really enjoyed it. Yay!

The Next Thing on My List

What happened at book club…
Happy New Year Wormies!!  Our 2019 book club season started out with a BANG! BANG! – BANG -BANG! (insert Alison’s voice and hand motions here.) The Next Thing on My List is a light, funny and enjoyable read.

Before We Were Yours

What happened at book club…
It was unanimous. Under normal circumstances I’d say we all enjoyed this book very much. Given the subject matter saying we enjoyed it, seems wrong. But for lack of something more appropriate, enjoy it we all did.

Most Anything You Please

By Trudy Morgan Cole “For decades, the Holloways have operated a convenience store in the working-class neighborhood of Rabbittown in St. John’s, and every customer has a story. In a vibrant, contemporary family saga, filled with idiosyncratic characters, Trudy Morgan-Cole tells the tale of three generations of Holloway women—Ellen, Audrey, and Rachel—their loves and their […]

Neuromancer

By William Gibson “William Gibson revolutionised science fiction in his 1984 debut Neuromancer. His noir narrative still glitters like chrome in the shadows and his depictions of the rise and abuse of corporate power look more prescient every day. Part thriller, part warning, Neuromancer is a timeless classic of modern SF and one of the 20th century’s most […]

Something is Always on Fire

By Measha Brueggergosman “Opera sensation Measha Brueggergosman has moved audiences around the world with her unique gifts. ..In this searingly honest and insightful memoir, Brueggergosman shares her experiences with music, but also her ongoing struggle to balance her ambition for a life fully lived with the traditions and responsibilities she has committed herself to. She […]

Rock Paper Sex

By Kerri Cull “St. John’s is known as a flourishing port city, a cultural gem, and popular tourist destination: a picturesque city of pubs and restaurants, music and colourful houses. But a thriving sex trade quietly exists beneath that polished conception, a trade few are aware of or even understand. In an engaging journalistic style, […]
