Here’s what happened at Book Club…
Well the gals were full of piss & vinegar tonight at our first book club meeting of 2013. This month we all looked forward to reading the sequel to The Best Laid Plans – one of the funniest books to read and discuss.
Most were not disappointed and loved the fact that The High Road continued EXACTLY where The Best Laid Plans had left off. Reading the first few pages brought us right back to the characters & story line we enjoyed so much. (In fact Peggy wondered if it may have been all one book originally and somewhere in the publishing process was split into two. – Interesting, may have to ask Terry Fallis about that).
Some felt that the sequel would have been better had there been some time lapse and not a deja vu election. It would have been really interesting to see whether Angus could have held the high ground and his no compromising good of the whole platform after a year or two in the down and dirty political arena. We weren’t so sure and this book doesn’t go there. Too bad.
We were almost unanimous that is a very enjoyable read. It’s laugh out loud funny in so many places. The introduction of GOUT and their unconventional election strategy was hilarious. Even though we knew what was about to happen to Angus or Daniel in many cases, we couldn’t wait to read how the author was going to describe it to us. As Daniel began opening the bottle of champagne for the POTUS & FLOTUS we could see what was coming but not the description of it…..
I felt a column of champagne strike my chin as I watched the ballistoc cork strike the flying Secret Service agent perfectly in the family jewels. I don’t mean kind of by his groin, or just below his navel. I mean a perfect, dead-on crotch shot. In a blink, the wordsmith in me conjured up “ballseye”.
The one thing we were all (unanimously, this time!) disappointed in was the oh so brief appearances by Pete1 and Pete2. We need to ask Terry Fallis what that was all about. We need more of the 2 Petes!
What would a book club meeting be without spin off conversations? This time it was politics, federal, provincial & American… no fear of conflicting opinions there, yikes! From there it went to gun control, the NRA and the recent convention ‘misfires’, children participating in The Biggest Loser, glove-clad nose picking men, and of course syphilis – amazing how many times that can come up at our meetings! Pam told us about the Planned Parenthood fundraiser dinner coming up in February. Here’s where you can get info and buy tickets: http://www.nlsexualhealthcentre.org/
Jen was a wonderful host with some great munchies – although she had a hard time getting rid of her wine. Now what’s up with that!!!! Let’s not let that happen again.
A great night!
